Odor issue from TJI Joist with Flak Jacket
SUGGESTED LANGUAGE FOR USE IN BUILDER COMMUNICATION WITH HOMEOWNERS
We have recently been informed of a potential issue with the TJI® Joists with Flak Jacket® protection manufactured after Dec. 1, 2016, that may be installed in your home’s basement. Some homeowners have complained of odor or irritation that may be coming from the coating used on these joists.
Weyerhaeuser, the manufacturer of the product, has identified a solution to resolve this issue. This process will involve applying an additional top coat to the affected joists. In most cases, once remediation begins in your home it will take less than a week to apply the coat and ventilate the basement.
We will be working with Weyerhaeuser to verify whether this product is in your home, and if so, to establish a remediation schedule. We will let you know as soon as possible when the situation will be resolved in your home.
We apologize for the inconvenience this causes you, and want you to know that we are doing everything we can to resolve this issue quickly and to make the process as easy for you as possible.
